I started on this remote portraiture series in 2020, in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.
At first, I aimed to create 40 portraits, in a nod to the origins of the word “quarantine”. The response was incredible, and it led me to explore the potential of this new way of working.
So 40 became 80.
For sitters, it was an easy time commitment and an entertaining way of witnessing an artwork’s creation (on screen, sitters watch a live camera feed of the portrait in progress).
For me, it meant I could offer a quick, flexible and informal portrait, something like a sketch – immediacy and expressiveness, without the need to become too stately or specific.
One 30-minute sitting over videoconference required.
Mixed media on treated paper.
